A practical checklist for secondhand jeans
Use measurements and close-up photographs to narrow down a denim purchase.
Know the fit you want
Start with jeans you already like. Note the waistband, rise, inseam, thigh width and leg opening. Ask the seller for comparable measurements and confirm how they took them. A familiar tagged size alone does not settle the fit.
Inspect the fabric
Look closely at the inner thighs, crotch seams, seat, knees and hems. Ask for a close-up of thin-looking areas. Check the fabric label if you prefer rigid denim or want some stretch. Do not assume a fit or fabric based on the brand name.
Check for alterations
Ask whether the jeans have been hemmed, tapered or repaired. Compare the stated inseam with your own needs. Look for clear photographs of the hems and waistband. Alterations may be perfectly acceptable, but they should be part of your decision.
Make the final comparison
Add shipping and any planned alterations to the price. Review the return terms before paying. If the fit, condition and total cost work for you, you have a more useful basis for deciding than a vague claim that the jeans are a bargain.
